Your vision is an image that represents what you want to achieve. Everyone on your team can conjure it in moments; it’s exciting and inspiring and makes the effort of work worthwhile.
If your team isn’t as focused as you would like, we can help you develop a clear vision, either by working with you 1-1, or by doing a vision workshop with your team. If you’d like to talk about this, schedule a consultation (20-30 minute phone call) using our contact form.
And read on for some tips and tools…
To develop your vision, it’s helpful to create a picture in your mind of what success, or the end result, looks like. For example:
Imagine a world where…
- People have all the knowledge they need to make great decisions right at their fingertips
- Cancer is so curable that the diagnosis never arouses fear
- Our team, standing on the awards platform with a gold medal
- Our event overflowing with enthusiastic participants enjoying every minute of their experience with us
- Working with the top clients in our field, and being the most respected firm in our space
Once you can clearly see it and articulate it, work it into all of your conversations, because everyone on your team needs to be able to see it; not just you.
Leaders often feel overwhelmed by the concepts of vision, mission, purpose and strategy, but it’s actually as simple as having a goal and getting everyone moving towards the goal as effectively as possible. If you, as leader, are clear on your goal, then:
is the exciting image of having achieved the goal that everyone on your team can clearly express when asked. It should be described in as few words as possible. “Picture this….”
is the why of it – why achieving this goal is important, beyond the money, beyond it being the job one must do – why is this goal worth achieving? What good will it do in the world, and for whom? And most important, why do you, as the leader, care about it? But it doesn’t have to be complicated. “Because then people will no longer have to worry about this particular problem anymore” is fine.
is what you are going to do about it. “We are going to visit every single company with this problem and make sure they know how we can help them solve it. And we will work with every single one that allows us to. And then we will share their stories.”
is how you are going to make it happen. For example, “how will our team identify every company with this problem…” etc.
Don’t wait until you’ve figured it out. Every day your team works without a clear vision is a low efficiency day.
Working with a coach can help you get the vision clear in your head, and help you get the vision clearly into the heads of everyone on your team as well.
If you’d like to schedule a consultation, send an e-mail using our contact form, and we will respond with upcoming openings. Usually we can get you scheduled for a phone call within a few days.
Some additional tools:
I use the tools below with clients who want to create a personal vision for their life. While this is not the same process we use in organizations, in both of these articles I explain what goes on in the brain and how having a clear vision propels a person powerfully towards a goal. The same concepts apply in organizations; we are just applying them to the group goal instead of the individual goal. But what is exciting about doing this work in organizations is that a group has far more synergy than an individual does. So when you can get a group clear and excited about the desired outcome, you can actually feel the power of the energy in the room and it seems like anything is possible. Imagine having this kind of powerful energy on your team moving you forward towards your organizational goals! Enjoy:
